The Community is the Framework

“we don’t offer crap—except good company (in the form of demos from passionate developers and entrepreneurs)” – Albert Lai

David Crow and Albert Lai conceived DemoCamp as a light-weight monthly gatheing for designers, developers and entrepreneurs to get together and demonstrate the cool stuff they had been working on. The very first DemoCamp was held in December 2005 at the Bubbleshare offices in Toronto, ON. DemoCamp is a variation of the un-conference style of event, started by the TorCamp group as an excuse to have more regular meetings. It was designed as a monthly format to bring together designers, developers and entrepreneurs to share what they’ve been working on and to find others in the community that are interested in similar topics. David has been instrumental in leading the first 16 DemoCampTorontos (he’s taken a sabbatical for number 17, but will be back full on for number 18). DemoCampToronto has grown from the original 28 individuals to over 300 at the most resent events.

DemoCamp is a derivative of the participant-generated BarCamp conference format. It’s DNA contains the sparks of open, creative communities. It’s goal has been to run on a semi-regular basis with the goal of helping people find other “interesting” people in their community. And hopefully participants will get to see something that inspires, educates or challenges them to improve themselves, their community or their tools.

Though conceived in Toronto, this style of get-together would work well anywhere. Why not start one in your city?
